Herbert "Herb" Weinstein is a consultant to governments and the food industry, principally in developing countries, in nutrition related projects. He also pursues food product and business development issues; export/import opportunities; legal aspects that include food legislation, labeling, advocacy and policy; and project implementation.
Being Mexican born, Herb obtained a Chemical Engineering Degree from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and once married, moved to Cambridge, MA where he was awarded M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Food Science and Technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Back to the top
Today an independent consultant, Herb has worked for the University of Arkansas - Pine Bluff, (at OMNI , a USAID funded project for micronutrient interventions in developing countries), where he was Food Technology Advisor as well as private/public sector's relationships manager. Previously he worked for several multinational companies: Unilever Foods (ACCO) in Mexico and General Foods Corp. (Now Philip Morris Co's) International and Domestic Divisions - Mexico, Brazil & U.S.A. This allowed him to gain ample experience in all operational aspects, starting in product developing and up to vice presidential obligations in the technical areas of both companies. He also spent many years in his native Mexico, working for important corporations as Grupo QUAN (Ice cream), Productos de Maiz (CPC Int'l) and Grupo CIFRA (Retailer). Furthermore, he has academia experience; he was head of the Dept. of Food Science at Universidad Iberoamericana - Mexico. Later he taught International Business and Marketing at Mercy College in Westchester, NY, (undergraduate) and at Long Island University (graduate level). After more than thirty years with multinational food companies, Herb has been doing consulting work in developing countries in the area of nutrition, with special interest in projects dealing with the elimination of micronutrient deficiencies. He also has broad experience in packaged food products involving all technical aspects, from quality control and product development to manufacturing, engineering and logistics. Most of his career has been spent in Latin America, thus he has become bi-cultural and tri-lingual - Spanish, Portuguese, English. He has dealt with licensing and technology transfer, and has evolved to executive level business and technology management, all with emphasis in emerging markets. Among his consulting clients are major multinational food companies, with whom he develops contacts and information that allowed them to export their products and also import products into the USA. Further to product development projects, he has assisted, with help of his extensive Latin-American network, in technical business development as well as business relationships, that in some cases have resulted in acquisitions. Herb is very active in several Professional societies, especially the Institute of Food Technologists where he was Chair of the Mexican section, as well as Chair of many long standing committees including Nominations and Elections. Also, he is very active in the continuing education efforts of the Institute as well as in lecturing at home and abroad in the subjects of his expertise. Back to the top
